With the introduction of the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II in 1959, the model remained largely unchanged from its predecessor (Silver Cloud I) in terms of design, with the most significant development being the powertrain. Whereas the Silver Cloud I was equipped with a 4.9-litre inline-six engine, the Silver Cloud II received a far more powerful 6.2-litre V8. This new engine greatly enhanced refinement and performance, and, combined with the timeless and elegant styling, has led collectors and marque specialists to regard the Silver Cloud II as the most desirable of the Silver Cloud series.

The example offered here, chassis LSAE127, was completed in 1962. It was delivered as an E-chassis and subsequently sent to H.J. Mulliner, who was commissioned to construct a Drophead Coupé body to design number 7504, widely considered by experts to be the most elegant interpretation of the model.

This particular design was selected only 74 times for left-hand-drive cars. It is believed that the design was applied approximately 107 times out of a total production of 2,717 Silver Cloud II models built between 1959 and 1962. As one of the final examples produced, it represents an exceptionally rare motor car and is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful open Rolls-Royces ever created.

Outstanding condition throughout

Externally, the model remained largely unchanged; however, it was equipped with a newly developed Rolls-Royce 6.2-litre, 90-degree pushrod V8 engine, which increased the vehicle’s weight by approximately 200 kg. Performance was significantly improved, with a top speed of 183 km/h. The most notable advancements, however, were in acceleration and torque delivery. The engine is paired with a four-speed automatic transmission, contributing to the renowned ease and refinement of driving a Silver Cloud. Power steering was introduced in the Silver Cloud II as standard equipment.

The mechanical condition of the car is excellent and has been consistently well maintained. The braking system offers smooth and progressive modulation, while the suspension is finely tuned to absorb road imperfections with exceptional composure. Both the drivetrain and the broader mechanical components have been meticulously cared for throughout the vehicle’s life.

The quality of the craftsmanship is immediately evident, and the car’s elegant proportions naturally lead one to question why this exceptionally refined design was not chosen more at the time. The Mulliner bodywork remains in outstanding condition throughout. The vehicle has been refinished in a beautiful dark blue metallic paint and has received new headlamps as well as a new soft-top roof. Aside from this, no further restoration was required to return the car to excellent condition. The body exhibits precise, even panel gaps and superb chrome detailing. The newly fitted convertible top operates with ease and presents itself to a very high standard. The car retains its original wheels, fitted with tires of the correct specifications.

The interior matches the same exceptional standard. It is presented in a particularly elegant colour combination, featuring beautifully reupholstered beige leather throughout. The restoration work has been carried out with a strong emphasis on originality, resulting in a highly authentic and impressive finish. The wood veneer on the dashboard has also been carefully restored and presents exceptionally well. All instruments and controls are meticulously finished and remain in excellent condition, as would be expected of a motor car of this calibre.

The car has had only three owners, each of whom has clearly cherished and maintained it with great care. As a result, it remains in excellent condition, both cosmetically and mechanically.

As one would expect of a true Rolls-Royce, the Silver Cloud has led a privileged and luxurious life. The car was originally delivered new to its first owner in Hollywood, who retained ownership from 1961 until 1968. The second owner also resided in the United States, based in New York, although the Drophead Coupé was primarily kept at her vacation residence in Palm Beach, Florida. Remarkably, this second ownership period lasted from 1968 until 2019. The current owner is based in the Netherlands, during which time the car has been carefully preserved and used sparingly, primarily during the summer months.

This Silver Cloud benefits from extensive documentation, including historical appraisal reports, period photographs from its time in the United States, as well as invoices relating to maintenance carried out during that period.
