Since the sixties, car rental company Hertz and Shelby have a unique partnership. In 1966 they started the 'Rent-A-Racer' program. Normal people, like you and me, could rent a Shelby Mustang. Shelby did this with the GT350 Mustang and named it the GT350-H, with the 'H' for Hertz. Not every model year of the Mustang had a 'Rent-A-Racer' but the ones that were delivered to Hertz, were specifically designed for renting.

The 1966 GT350-H, were the whole program started, was only delivered in black with bronze striping. This is how you would recognize a Hertz rental car. But the '68 GT35-H's were delivered in various colors. So nobody could recognize it as a rental. This particular example is painted in 'Sunlit Gold' with white striping.

302 c.i. V8

The biggest differences between a normal GT350 and a 'H' is that the rental cars were mostly delivered with automatic transmission. In this way everybody could drive it.

Model year 1968 brought the updated 302 c.i. V8 instead of the 289 c.i. that was already in the Mustang since 1965. Because it was a rental, the engine lacked a bit of go-fast parts. Besides mechanical adjustments, this Mustang is also optioned with AM Radio, working airconditioner, power steering, tilt-away steering column, power braking, tinted glass and a heavy duty battery which has obviously already been replaced with a new one.

Shelby Mustang GT350-H Maintenance history

This Shelby was ordered in 1967 and was delivered in January 1968 to Hertz. The car was on the roads of the USA until 2010 for 83.000 miles.

The car was then purchased and transported to the Netherlands by a restoration company: Van Laarhoven Classic Cars. This company focusses mainly on the restoration of Fords and Shelby's. Van Laarhoven Classics gave the car a complete restoration. The car has been completely dismantled and has been stripped from its original paint. The bodywork has been repaired where necessary and as many original panels as possible have been re-used. The bodywork has then been completely repainted in its original colors and is therefore in new condition.

Not only bodywork has been done, also the engine gearbox rear axle and suspensions have been completely overhauled. Also, the upholstery has been partly renewed from leather in the original configuration.

At this moment the car is ready for sale including its original US plates (pink slips included). Documentation of the complete restoration proces is included as well.
